After the tragic events of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Gainax studios put together a Gurren Lagann charity book featuring fan art from people in the animation industry. Our old buddy Bobby Rubio (who was a storyboard artist on Avatar, and who now works as a story artist at Pixar) worked on behalf of Gainax to enlist a group of U.S. artists to contribute to the book, many of whom were also Avatar alumni. It was an honor to pitch in with all of these talented artists on such a worthwhile cause, put together by such a legendary studio. FLCL changed my life and continues to be an inspiration for me all these years later. And I think Gurren Lagann was the perfect choice as the theme of this charitable book, as that series has such a great message of undying optimism and perseverance at its core.
